The Tramway ST5632 7439 to ST5627 7423
This is the track of a light railway built in 1867 to transfer mud excavated from the enlargement of the Cumberland Basin to fill the extensive quarries that then existed on the surface of the Downs. Trolleys of spoil were hauled up the track by a stationary engine, and then pulled across the surface on temporary rails by horses. The job was only completed in 1883. The top end of the plane is very hard to find, and the bottom end is the vertical lip of the Great Quarry. The rest of the plane was supported on wooden scaffolding running down to the level of the River Avon.
