The Dumps  ST5708 7471
The Dumps, or Tumps, are an extensive area of deep trenches that may date back to the seventeenth century, and are possibly old lead mines. This area was also quarried for calamine and limestone (for building and burning for lime). It is unclear why they were not levelled when the old quarries were filled in in the 1870s. The deep areas have largely been overgrown by scrub in the past fifty years.
