Birds of the Downs Grid reference ST569 745
Some 20 species of common birds breed on the Downs, many of them in the clumps of scrub. In April and May the songs of resident wrens, robins, dunnocks, blackbirds and song thrush can be heard along with those of summer visitors, blackcap and chiffchaff. Crows, jays, wood pigeons and magpies all breed, and if you’re lucky you might see our kestrels and buzzards, and in the woodland great spotted and green woodpecker. In winter there are often redwings, and black-headed gulls as well.
