Clifton Suspension Bridge ST5655 7313
The world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge was designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, although he didn’t live to see his creation finished. Work began in 1831, but the project was dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died aged 53 in 1859, but the Clifton Suspension Bridge was completed as his memorial and opened in December 1864.
Stroll across the bridge for fabulous views of the Avon Gorge, elegant Clifton and the magnificent city beyond. On the Leigh Woods side you’ll find a Visitor Centre which opens daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The centre has a wonderful exhibition about the building of the bridge as well as information about the wildlife of the Avon Gorge and Downs. For further information visit www.cliftonbridge.org.uk
