The oldest war memorial ST5698 7327
This may be the oldest war memorial in Britain. It was erected in 1767 by Sir William Draper to record the gallant soldiers that he commanded when he captured the Spanish colony of Manilla, in the Philippine Islands, in 1762 during the Seven Years War (1756-63). This was the war that added Canada and India to the British Empire, but the Philippines were given back to Spain. Sir William was the first Conservator of the Downs, appointed in 1766.
